Preliminary Exercise 8: Practicing Camerawork Day 1

Preliminary Exercise 8: Practicing Camerawork Day 1

Introduction paragraph

Camerawork is the way a scene is filmed. Camerawork is important in film because it can set the tone or mood for the film's narrative. When planning camera shots it's important to consider your shot size, camera angles, framing, and composition. Shot sizes refers to the size of the frame of the scene such as a cowboy shot which shows the subject from the mid thigh up. Camera angles is the way a camera is placed and positioned for the scene, a example of this would be a point of view camera angle which shows what the subject is seeing. Framing is the presentation of visuals inside of a film. This can go hand in hand with how many people are in the shot like two actors in one scene will make a "Two-shot". Composition is the arrangement of scene elements inside a film. Balance and symmetry take major roles in this. A cinematographer is responsible for camera work inside of a film. Roger Deakins is a perfect example with many nominated films such as the Shawshank Redemption and Fargo. Me and my team have to develop camera work skills as it will be useful and essential later when we make our film introduction, knowing these skills will aid us tremendously and help us give a great product.

Reflection Paragraph

The assignment was to practice camera work and get a feel for it with eight shots of varying camera work and composition. Me and my partner learned a lot about camera work through this and became more versed in this subject. I was the camera guy and my partner directed every shot. We used our home classroom and the hallway outside to take our shots and we had a storyline for our shots which to sum it up included the life of a bullied girl who fought back. This exercise was fun and easy as we had our storyboards to use and plan out our shots. We did accomplish the goal of taking our shots and we executed this in a few ways. Dorine B. and I used our fellow classmates to act out our planned shots and we used my IPhone 11 to take these shots and make them as clear as possible. I would say we were well versed and experienced in using it. We learnt how to properly take camera shots that follow composition and listed angles and we learned how to set them up.

Preliminary Exercise 7: Storyboarding Camerawork Day 2

Preliminary Exercise 7: Storyboarding Camerawork Day 2

Introduction Paragraph

In this exercise, we went through the storyboarding process, this process consisted of making 16 shots sketches which had varying features like sizes and angles. For the storyboarding process, you need to feature every key point as well as add captions detailing what's happening within the panel. Some skills that are used to make a storyboard is communication in visual and verbal ways, sketching, imagination, and well planning. The objective of #3 and #4 is to plan the rest of the 16 shots and be able to plan a clear short story with differentiating angles and film techniques. The categories of the camerawork techniques used in our assignment consisted of shot sizes like extreme close up, medium shots, close up, medium full shots, and it consisted of framing like insert shots, two shots, and single shots. We also used composition to build our setting and background for the film such as balance and deep focus.

 Reflection Paragraph

The activity's objective was to learn the process of production of media through storyboarding in the development stage of filming. Me and my partner learned a lot about planning throughout this assignment and we also learned how to make a consistent well thought story with the storyboard throughout day 2. This day was easier as we were more used to it rather than day 1 where we had to set up the basics for our short story in the first two story boards. We accomplished the goal by consistently working on the assignment and dedicating time towards the planning stage, me and Dorine. B worked hard on this storyboarding and it came out successful. I did the drawing and writing while my partner gave me the shot sizes, angles, composition, and guidance throughout the assignment. My partner worked on examining the rubric given which shown a list of what to work with and we collectively planned shots together with this. We only used our laptop to review the exercise, the rest was done throughout communication in person and we think we did adequate on this. We learned how to storyboard properly and with learning that we have new skills in planning for a film.

Preliminary Exercise 6: Story Boarding Camera Work day 1

Introduction Paragraph

Storyboarding is the finding of which shots that go with certain angles and pictures within a film. Two important reasons the industry uses storyboarding in the planning films is that it helps guide and ease the production process of the film as well as help visualize a future outcome for the final product of your film. Film production is the stage of filmmaking process where the planned story is acted out. Camera work is the way cameras are used and positioned within a movie or show. Reflection Paragraph

We learned about the different shots and varying angles that can be used within scenes, I learned how convenient and useful storyboarding can be in planning films. It gave a guideline for me and my partner to finish the exercise. The goal of this exercise was for students to analyze storyboarding as well as plan future shots in eight panels. Day one was easy but different experience than the rest of the exercises, sketching and planning shots was a good experience. Dorine B. and I communicated ideas and I drew the shots out, my partner directed the eight shots and we used my iPhone to take the photos. I feel me and my partner are adequate and expert in this.
