Preliminary Exercise 5: Analyzing Genre

 Preliminary Exercise 5: Analyzing Genre

Introduction Paragraph

The assignment consisted of us making a bubble diagram poster analyzing a specific subgenre selected and documenting 3 examples of mise en scene. Genre is important to film producers and audiences as it dictates the style of filming, narrative, and it's atmosphere. Genres are the subjects like comedy, horror, action, and sci-fi. A subgenre is a smaller and more specific genre based from the main genre which is more wide and broad in it's style, a example of this would be action comedy. The film genre I like watching the most is romance and sci fi, I enjoy these the most due to how they feel relatable as well as make me feel excited during some scenes in sci fi like Star Wars.

Reflection Paragraph

Me and my partner made a bubble diagram poster to learn more about genre and show skill in the subject. We studied and researched multiple things about the film we chose that fits that genre that's chosen. We used Google on our school laptops to find information needed to complete the assignment, I would say we are experts in research and skill in using such media. We learned a lot about genre and it's subgenres as well as how to define it and describe it as well.

Preliminary Exercise 4: Analyzing Mise en scene

Preliminary Exercise 4: Analyzing Mise en scene

INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH

In this preliminary exercise, we chose a film of our choice and analyzed elements of Mise en Scene within the film. We had three sections towards this exercise, each person in our group took one section. We went over vocabulary related towards mise en scene and its elements as well. We also went over the general information of the film we chose to analyze. Then finally, the last section consisted of still frames from the film with explanation of the elements like acting, setting, color, and more. The objective of this exercise was to be able to display proper understanding of mise en scene within film by evaluating a film of our choice and the elements of mise en scene in the beginning of the film. The film we chose was "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse".

REFLECTION PARAGRAPH

The objective of this exercise was to overall strengthen our knowledge of Mise en scene in film and our analytical ability to find its elements within films. The process of this exercise mostly took part in Office 365 'Word', the other parts of this process took place in Google for research about the film we chose. I would say I am well versed in using Office 365 at a high intermediate or expert level. We made this document to deeply analyze the chosen film as well as show knowledge in elements of Mise en scene. In the document, we discussed related vocabulary, general information of the chosen film, and elements of Mise en scene found in still shots of the beginning part of the film. I worked with my partners "M" and "D" to create this document and we all equally shared work to get our work finished in adequate time. We learned how to properly describe and analyze Mise en scene elements within films at the end of this exercise.

Preliminary Exercise 3: Identifying connotations of mise en scene codes and their relationship to film genre

Preliminary Exercise 3: Identifying connotations of mise en scene codes and their relationship to film genre

INTRODUCTION

In this preliminary exercise, we worked on a creative diagram of a chosen genre and film of our choice to describe elements of Mise en scene. We worked in pairs in this exercise and researched about the elements that fit into our film. Our chosen film was "21 Jump Street" and our genre was comedy. We described elements like color, lighting, set design, props and makeup, characters, and setting. The poster we made involved creativity and artistic design as well as researched answers and descriptions for our film.

REFLECTION

In this preliminary exercise, me and my partner "M" worked together to make a poster based on the Mise en scene elements of our chosen film "21 Jump Street". We used our laptops to research on Google for information about the film and find any linking details for Mise en scene elements. My partner and I split the work into half, one of us researched and wrote and the other colored and drew. We discussed into great detail about the film. We learned how to describe elements on a film and also describe a genres element as well.

Preliminary Exercise 2: Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics Analysis

PRELIMINARY EXERCISE 2: ROLAND BARTHES' THEORY OF SEMIOTICS ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

Roland Barthes was a French literary theorist and philosopher. Roland Barthes was the creator of the Theory of Semiotics. The Theory of Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation. The relationship of myth, denotation, and connotation in our society falls in their signification, they contain signs, signifiers, and the signified. We use these in our society to give meaning and messages we want to convey. Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics is beneficial towards planning a film as it provides meaning and possible messages that can be portrayed inside the film. The goal of my exercise was to be able to analyze the provided film and its codes and evaluate its connotations inside the table. I watched a video clip from YouTube from the film "Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2", the clip pertained of eye-catching props and costumes, a distinct setting, and a certain way of acting. The three visual codes and audio codes consisted of, the Mockingjay dress, ceremonial stage, stiff expressions, and finally the crowd roars and shock. All of these codes combined build the narrative for the scene which was to show an uprising and a great upset across their society.

REFLECTION PARAGRAPH

The objective of this activity was to build upon analyzing elements of semiotics within film, the process of the task consisted of watching the video clip extensively and documenting any found signs and codes within the video clip. We made this presentation to show a detailed analysis on the Theory of Semiotics within the given video clip. We used our laptops to run PowerPoint, I would say that I am experienced in using PowerPoint as I've used it throughout my academic journey. In the presentation, we discussed and explained myth, denotation, and connotation. We also went over who Roland Barthes was and his importance. Finally, we made the analytical table covering the Hunger Games video clip and its given codes. Me and my partner "J" shared and took turns in each slide dividing work for efficiency. I learned a great amount about Roland Barthes and his philosophy. I also learned how to properly analyze codes in film scenes.

Preliminary Exercise 1: Saussure's Theory of Semiotics

 Saussure's Theory of Semiotics

Hello Cambridge, in this blog I will explain and go in depth about Saussure's Theory of Semiotics. Ferdinand de Saussure is the creator of the theory of Semiotics, the theory of Semiotics contains of three things. Sign, the smallest units of meaning. Signifier, a signs physical form/object (such as image, sound, printed word, action, gesture, event, structure, and pattern. Finally signified, the meaning or idea expressed/conveyed by the signifier. Saussure's theory is beneficial towards researching a film as it can help identify features or meaning of scenes or the film in general. A little bit about Ferdinand de Saussure, Ferdinand de Saussure was a French linguist that theorized that a sign is made up of two parts. The "signifier" and the "signified", these would be used today to describe any given meaning and inner meaning from a sign. This use of signs would go under Semiology in today's date, semiology is the study of signs in our culture. It involves the theory and analysis of signs, and signification in print, audio visual, digital media texts, etc.

REFLECTION

I worked with my partner Jordan; we did a preliminary assignment based on Saussure's Theory of Semiotics, the instructions of the assignment were to provide three images and define its signifier and signified meanings, then describe the culture or origination behind the signifiers for every sign provided as well as describe 'sign', 'signifier', and 'signified'. Jordan helped design and edit the slides and research with me to figure out signifiers for the signs we gave. The application we used to work on this assignment is 'PowerPoint', I would say I'm an expert at utilizing the applications feature as I've been using PowerPoint my whole school experience. Before this, I wasn't as knowledgeable of the theory of semiotics than now. After doing the exercise I learnt more about signs, signifiers, and signified. In the exercise me and my partner made a slide dedicated to describing the features of Ferdinand's theory of semiotics.
