Preliminary Exercise 1: Saussure's Theory of Semiotics

 Saussure's Theory of Semiotics

Hello Cambridge, in this blog I will explain and go in depth about Saussure's Theory of Semiotics. Ferdinand de Saussure is the creator of the theory of Semiotics, the theory of Semiotics contains of three things. Sign, the smallest units of meaning. Signifier, a signs physical form/object (such as image, sound, printed word, action, gesture, event, structure, and pattern. Finally signified, the meaning or idea expressed/conveyed by the signifier. Saussure's theory is beneficial towards researching a film as it can help identify features or meaning of scenes or the film in general. A little bit about Ferdinand de Saussure, Ferdinand de Saussure was a French linguist that theorized that a sign is made up of two parts. The "signifier" and the "signified", these would be used today to describe any given meaning and inner meaning from a sign. This use of signs would go under Semiology in today's date, semiology is the study of signs in our culture. It involves the theory and analysis of signs, and signification in print, audio visual, digital media texts, etc.

REFLECTION

I worked with my partner Jordan; we did a preliminary assignment based on Saussure's Theory of Semiotics, the instructions of the assignment were to provide three images and define its signifier and signified meanings, then describe the culture or origination behind the signifiers for every sign provided as well as describe 'sign', 'signifier', and 'signified'. Jordan helped design and edit the slides and research with me to figure out signifiers for the signs we gave. The application we used to work on this assignment is 'PowerPoint', I would say I'm an expert at utilizing the applications feature as I've been using PowerPoint my whole school experience. Before this, I wasn't as knowledgeable of the theory of semiotics than now. After doing the exercise I learnt more about signs, signifiers, and signified. In the exercise me and my partner made a slide dedicated to describing the features of Ferdinand's theory of semiotics.
