Mise en scene Codes PT.2 (Research)

 Introduction

This is part two of the last blog, which described my research process of "Kissing Booth" and how I went about detailing mise en scene. This research part was the lengthiest due to having to examine everything about the opening and describe things like it's setting. However, this allowed for us to accurately use our skills to describe mise en scene and further improve our knowledge on it.

Character

The characters are seen close to each other with similar expressions on their face. The color in their outfits and lighting reflect the setting and also their status.

  1. How does color support the film genre? (Look at the tone of the setting, characters, etc.) The color in film supports the film genre as it consists of bright and also dull colors regarding the scenes. They use red to reflect love and they also use specific colors in costumes like yellow and white to strike rivalry in the genre, which is romance.

  1. Composition

  1. Define composition in film. Composition in film is how the elements in a scene

  1. Define blocking in film. Document an example in the film opening and why did the producer direct the characters. Blocking in film is the instructions tailored for actors. The producer directed the characters to act clueless towards why they're being stared at.Inserting image...

  1.  Define framing in film. Document an example in the film opening and why did the producer direct the characters. Framing in film is the positioning and placement of objects or characters within a film. The producer framed every character in this scene based on personality and stage of film.

  1. Define depth of field. Document an example in the film opening and why did the producer direct the characters. Depth of field is the range of distance and focus. The producer made this shot to be clear on the main characters and blurred the background for the audience to pay attention to the characters.

  1. Lighting

  1. What is the lighting in the film? Lighting in film is the direction and manipulation of light inside a shot.

  1. Document if the film opening established low-key or high-key lighting. High key lighting.

  1. Select an image from the film opening to analyze. What type of lighting is used? How is lighting used in the opening of the film, and what tone does it communicate meaning?

Add image and document the connotations associated by the lighting in the film.

The lighting in this shot is bright, the lighting used in the opening of the film is high key but also switched towards a low key lighting when it came to the hospital in a montage. The tone the lighting communicates is happiness and joy.

  1. Tone

  1. What is the tone in the film? Tone in film is the overall mood or atmosphere within a film.

  1. What type of tone was created in the film, and what mise en scene elements were used to make it and does it support the story and genre of the film opening?   (Color, lighting, camera angle, setting, etc.) The tone created in the film was a happy and comedic tone. Mise en scene elements that make the tone is the setting with the colorful lights as well as the structuring of characters in a scene, the characters are usually close together and arent separated.

Reflection

After doing this portion of the research, I felt more knowledgeable about mise en scene. My team and I agreed I should do this part but I wasn't left without help. Skye T. assisted me on the last portions of this research part. We used Word to complete this as well as using Netflix or YouTube to watch the opening. We did this research on our laptops and phones.
