Research Part 6: Sound Codes

 Introduction

Research part 6 consisted of sound codes. Sound codes are codes given to the audience via sound cues within the film. Me and my partner Skye T. worked on this portion together. We had to go into detail about dialogue from the opening as well as SFX (sound effects) and music. Doing this required us to document the specific sound as well as the meanings given by the codes.

Research Part 6: Sound Codes (Richard and Skye)

  1. Introduction

  1. How would you describe the sound in the opening sequence and what were the decisions made by the sound engineer to support the genre of the film.

  1. Provide examples from the dialogue, music and sound effects in the sequence.

Sound Techniques and definitions

Document sound

Meaning established by sounds to support the genre.

Dialogue

  1. You have zero experience with guys. Youve never even had a boyfriend”

  1. “Nobody can know, at least until I tell Lee”

  1. “In life you can either follow the rules or follow your heart”

The dialogue in the film indicates romantic connotations with terms like “boyfriend” and “follow your heart”. Theres also drama connotations with the second quote mentioning secrecy. The dialogue defines the main characters personality as well as arcs she has in the movie. From desparate for love to finding herself.

Sound effects

  1. Phone notification chime

  1. Pants ripping

Elle gets phone notification and hides it from her best friend. This connects audiences to the genre because the message is teen relationship drama. The sound of Elle’s pants ripping connects the audience to the genre because it shows the behind the scenes of a teenage girl.

Music

  1. Robbie Nevil – Crash Into Me

  1. Walkthemoon – Shut up and Dance

The music supports the tone   by bringing a vibrant tone as well as modern pop giving off joyous and happy connotations.

Reflection

This was reaching the last bits of our research. Doing this on Word made everything easier. Our group decided me and Skye T. to work on this portion. We used our school laptops as well as YouTube to study the sounds from the opening and describe the meanings. We talked about what meaning was given by certain sound choices. We were able to define each code given from the opening.
